The fear of speed, plus the impracticality of speeding, impact car buying decsions.

It’s still fun to know how fast is fast when it comes to production street cars. The fastest street car in 1993 is fifty-four miles an hour slower than the fastest street car in 2010. In fact the 2010 fastest street legal car is eleven miles an hour faster than the 2007 fastest street car.

The Top Fastest Street Legal Cars Change Almost Every Year

In 1993 the fastest street legal car was the Jaguar XJ220 which could reach a speed of 213 miles an hour. In 1994 the McLaren F1 reached a speed of 231 miles an hour and in 2005 the Koenigsegg CCR hit a maximum speed of 240.7 miles an hour at the Nardo test track. That speed was verified the Guinness World Records, but that same year the Bugatti Veyron recorded a 253.8 mile an hour reading and that number was verified by inspection officials.

Cars kept getting faster. In 2007 the SCC Ultimate Aero TT had a verified recorded speed of 256.14 miles an hour and the 2010 winner, The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, reached a speed of 267.81 which was verified by Guinness World Records.

The list of the nine fastest street cars in the world may surprise some car lovers. The website Buzzle: Fastest Street Cars recognizes only one US car. The other cars are limited production models from other countries.

  • The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is considered #1 and is the fastest street legal car in the world as well as the most expensive.
  • The SCC Ultimate Aero TT(Win Turbo) certainly made the list thanks to its 960lb-ft of torque at 6150 rpm
  • The Dauer 962 Le Mans is a road version of the Porsche 962 and can accelerate from 0 to 60 in a little over two seconds.
  • The Ultima GTR has a 640hp engine in one model and a 720hp engine in another. The UltimaGTR720 accelerates from 0 to 60 in 2.6 seconds.
  • The Caparo T1 has seven hundred horse power and has been clocked 0 to 60 in 2.5 seconds.
  • The Saleen S7 has a 850 horsepower engine and is considered a FIA-GT Champion thanks to forty wins.
  • The Ascari A10 produces 625bhp and can hit 215 miles a hour.
  • The Gumpert Apollo has an Audi engine and accelerates from 0 to 60 in three seconds.
  • The Ford RS200 can accelerate from 0 to 60 in under 2.1 seconds.
