What Happens if You Put Diesel in a Gas Engine?

01 May

We live rushed lives, always on the run, looking at the clock. Sometimes, due to the speed of the lives we live, accidents happen, mishaps, such as putting diesel in your gas engine car. Although diesel pumps have a bigger nozzle, it may happen. You may get into a panic mode, thinking that you have ruined your mode of transportation. However, you can do a few things.

Diesel is designed for higher torque and power train engines. They need a higher compression ratio to start. Diesel does not need a spark to start. Gasoline does not provide this characteristic. Diesel is wax- like and it is necessary to lubricate the fuel injectors and diesel injection pump. Gasoline is not like that, therefore, gas engines require a spark to start, which diesel cannot provide. You cannot start a diesel engine with regular gas; it will die and fail. Regular gasoline does not provide the lubrication needed to start the diesel engine, and may cause damage to it – thousands of dollars in damage. On the lighter side, the engine stalls; on the more serious damage it can cause, the fuel injection will get damaged, you will have bent rods, broken pistons, and a blown head gasket on a diesel vehicle. Gas in a diesel engine may detonate. This will ruin the entire engine and put you out thousands of dollars in repairs.

On a gas engine, diesel cannot produce the spark necessary for the engine to start. A vehicle that uses gas will not start or fail to perform. Less damage than in a diesel engine will occur, but you must drain the diesel out of the gas thank to be able to start your car. This may run about $189-$300 approximately. If you put a small amount of diesel, then it may be diluted by filling the tank with the regular gas and running the car so the diesel wears out. In modern fuel injection systems, it may cause some trouble, but not ruin the engine – it needs to be flushed out, or the car will not perform well. In addition, using fuel injector cleaner and replacing the fuel filter may be necessary. This will add to the cost. It will depend on how much diesel is put in the tank.

It is easier to make the mistake of putting gasoline in a diesel vehicle. This is because the gasoline nozzle is smaller and will fit the large diesel opening. The much larger diesel nozzle will catch your eye, hopefully on time because it will not appear to fit properly in the gas opening. However, many people have managed to pump diesel into their gas vehicles. If you realize this mistake on time, it is best to call a trained auto mechanic and drain your tank, better avoiding starting the engine. A garage may tow your car without having to start it.

Maybe the best prevention to this problem is to slow down the speed of life and pay attention to the moment.
