For the past few years, automakers have set their focus upon improving the fuel efficiency of cars. Rising fuel costs can be attributed to this shift. Since 2006 or so, many vehicles have been improved immensely with regards to fuel economy. Many cars now break the 30 miles per gallon mark, as do a handful of SUVs; Most of these vehicles are hybrid or electric to allow for such good fuel economy. By far, cars attain higher gas mileage numbers than do SUVs or trucks.
*The Most Fuel Efficient Car Available*
The Toyota Prius currently gets the best gas mileage of all cars, trucks, and SUVs. At 51 miles per gallon in the city and 48 miles per gallon on the highway, no other car comes close to comparing with the fuel economy of the Toyota Prius. It has a hybrid-electric engine that allows for such great gas mileage. The next closest car with regards to fuel economy is the Honda Civic Hybrid at 40 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway. Still, the Prius is the most fuel efficient car and is consistently ranked as one of the least polluting cars in the world too. The newest model boasts a heating system that runs on solar power.
*Coming Soon: 2011 Chevrolet Volt*
By November 2010, however, the Toyota Prius will no longer be the champion of fuel efficiency because the Chevrolet Volt goes on sale. Boasting at least 100 miles per gallon, the electric Volt – no pun intended as the Volt is an electric car – is going to be the epitome of fuel efficiency. Its ability to have such high gas mileage is that the Volt will run on electricity for the first 40 miles of travel per electric charge. When gas only is used, fuel economy will be closer to 50 to 60 miles per gallon. Either way, these numbers are much higher than those of the Toyota Prius.
In the near future, even more cars are planned to be put into production that will continue to drive fuel efficiency to higher and higher levels. Currently, the Toyota Prius is the most fuel efficient car on the market, but it will no longer hold that title in November 2010. At that point, the Chevrolet Volt will be the most fuel efficient car available on the auto market. The Chevrolet Volt won’t hold that title for long though because other cars are currently in the planning and testing phase that will get better gas mileage than either the Prius or the Volt. The technology for fuel efficient cars is continually changing and providing better cars with regards to fuel economy. Right now, the Prius is king. In November, the Volt will be king. A few years later, who knows which car will be the best?
