What Are Snow Tires?

21 Apr

Driving is a very risky task that one must encounter on a daily basis. However, the danger is amplified when one must trust their vehicle to maneuver safely on hazardous snowy roads. When winter comes, a set of snow tires is one of the best investments one can possibly make. In fact, a set of snow tires could possibly save your life in really awful weather conditions.

Snow tires are special tires that are used by people when they have to drive in treacherous wet and slick areas. Numerous people who live in bitter climates, especially around mountain ranges have cars equipped with special snow tires. In fact, in some areas where the roads are very unsafe, it is now required by law that one must furnish their vehicle with snow tires in order to drive.

In the winter, snow tires can be used instead of using snow chains. They are designed for ultimate performance on snow and ice. They are composed differently than your typical all- weather tires; the rubber on a snow tire is much softer. This allows enhanced low temperature driving due to providing excellent traction in the cold. Some snow tires can be equipped with studs for even further traction. If one lives in an area where there are constant bad weather conditions, studded snow tires may be preferred.

On a snow tire there are more small- tread areas which assist with driving in wet conditions. Snow tires are intended to drastically lessen the chances of hydroplaning. It is much easier for water to escape from underneath the snow tire than a regular all weather tire. Additionally, a snow tire will help provide protection from black ice. Black ice is a very thin sheet of ice that covers the roadway. Most cannot tell that the road is icy until it is too late and the vehicle is already sliding. With a snow tire, some of this sliding will be avoided. Snow tires are a much safer alternative in the winter to help avoid getting into an accident. Skidding and sliding on the road is not totally avoided with a snow tire; however, the risk is severely decreased.

There are countless unnecessary deaths due to the treacherous winter road conditions. People lose control of their cars and slide into a ditch or even another vehicle. Many deaths occur every year due to winter driving accidents. Most cars simply aren’t equipped well for winter driving. Many winter accidents and deaths could have possibly been avoided if the vehicle had been properly equipped with snow tires. Buying snow tires for this winter could perhaps be the most brilliant investment of your lifetime.
