How to Operate a Boat?

18 Jul

Lots of people think operating a boat is similar to operating a car until they finally get into the boat and realize that it is actually nothing like a land vehicle. Boats are completely different types of vehicles, as they are propelled by a totally different means. There are even certain rules to follow while out on the water. Yes, that’s right, you cannot simply drive out wherever you’d like as this could potentially pose serious risks for you and other boaters. Boating is something that can be very simple and enjoyable if the boater is trained and knowledgeable, but to a new boater, things can be a little confusing at first.

The first, most important things to do before operating a boat are to take a boating safety course and to check if your state requires that you obtain a boating license. If you happen to pass the boating safety course, this might actually save you money on your boat insurance. This is because the insurance company will be more likely to view you as a safer driver than say, somebody that has not taken a boating safety course. In terms of boating licenses, not all states require that boaters have a license. However, there are still some that do, so just be sure to check.

When it comes to driving a boat, you’ll always want to take a few things into consideration before doing so. You’ll want to check how much fuel there is, whether you’re near any fuel stations, how much oil you’ve got, etc. It’s important to always make these checks every time before heading out onto the water to avoid any complications.

Next, you’ll need to assess what type of boat you own so that you can properly start the boat. If you own an outboard engine, check with the owner’s manual for clarification on starting the boat. If you own an inboard engine, begin by switching the ventilation blowers on. You’ll then be able to power the engine on. Make sure you’ve got a GPS or some kind of location tracking device on board to aid you throughout your boating endeavors. This is for safety and convenience reasons, and it’s never a bad idea to keep on hand.

You’ll want to begin by taking note of weather conditions. For example, if it’s windy, you’ll need to keep this in mind as you drive the boat. You’ll want to pay attention to signs around the marina such as “No Wake” and such. This simply means that you must drive as carefully and slowly as possible throughout the marina so that you do not create forceful waves for other boaters or boats in slips.

You’ll notice different colored buoys when leaving the marina or busy area. These are simply in place to give you an idea of where the current is. To keep things simple, the red buoys should always pass you on the right, and the green buoys should pass you on the left. In simplest terms, drive between the red and green buoys as if you were driving on a road. You will eventually come to the open sea where hands-on learning will be the best way for you to learn.

Of course, the best advice to learn the most about boating is to take the boating safety course. You’ll be doing yourself a favor as well as your passengers and other boaters.
