How to Buy a Used Motorcycle?

15 Dec

To successfully buy a good quality used motorcycle you must be knowledgeable in motorcycles in general. If you are not, then seek out the help of a friend that is. Searching for a used motorcycle to buy if you are not knowledgeable can lead you to making a bad purchase, or in paying too much.

Know the Used Motorcycle Market

Familiarize yourself with the basic prices in your area. Look at advertisements in the paper, or pay a visit to a local motorcycle shop and check out the prices. Determine what you are willing, or able, to spend on a used motorcycle and then hunt for the best deal around.

Private owners may advertise a better price, but you will really need to be knowledgeable about motorcycles or you may be purchasing a bike that is in bad shape, or mechanically unsound. Do not purchase a used motorcycle because you like the way it looks. Check out the mechanics and overall equipment as well.

Buying a used motorcycle means that the engine, tires, shocks and electrical system has all had wear on them. Has the motorcycle ever been wrecked? This could mean frame damage. Look the used motorcycle over for any evidence that it has been laid down or dropped, even if the owner assures you that it was never wrecked.

Check the front forks where the rubber seal is. Any evidence of oil around them indicated that the fork seals are leaking. If you do not know how to replace them your self, this will be a substantial expense that will need taken care of immediately.

Check the tires for wear as well as any signs of dry rot or cracking. If the used motorcycle has sat in one place for awhile the tires may have flat spots, or dry rotted cracks. This is extremely unsafe and means an additional purchase before you should ride the used motorcycle.

One Size Does Not Fit All

You need to buy a used motorcycle that fits your height and weight comfortably. There are many different styles, sizes and weights to choose from when selecting the right motorcycles to buy. When you are looking at a used motorcycle you want to sit comfortably on it. Place the bike on the belly rest, or have a friend hold it securely for you.

Sit on the seat, place your feet on the rests and your hands on the handlebar grips. If you feel cramped up, the motorcycle is too small. If you feel stretched out and cannot easily maneuver the brake or gear shift, then the motorcycle is too big. Find a used motorcycle that fits your size comfortably.

Finding the right size used motorcycle is a safety feature that should not be ignored. You should be able to stand beside the motorcycle and push it a distance. You should also be able to back the motorcycle up by walking beside it and pulling backwards on the handlebars. Do not purchase a used motorcycle that you cannot safely operate.
