2009 Nissan Cube 1.8 SL

31 Jul

According to US News and World Reports, the Nissan Cube ranks 16 out of 31 affordable small cars. This ranking is based on an analysis of 32 published reviews and test drives of the Nissan Cube, and includes an analysis of available reliability and safety data.

The Shape of a Cube

The 2009 Cube is the first year for the car in the American market, though the current model is the third generation of the Cube. The first two generations were only sold in Japan and Hong Kong. The cars unusual and eccentric styling is meant to appeal to younger drivers. The car has an asymmetrical design with a cargo door that swings to the side and a rear window that wraps around one of the sides. The windows are bordered by a beveled frame and look like picture frames.

Inside a Cube

The interior design is filled with rounded edges and curves. According to Nissan designers, the inspiration for the interior design was the “enveloping curves of a Jacuzzi.” Even with the strange design, it is still a functional vehicle for people and cargo.

All Cubes are manufactured in Japan and come with a 1.8 liter, four-cylinder engine. Standard with the Cube are power windows, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control. The SL model is one step up from the base model and has more standard features.

The Good, the Bad, and the Safe

Due to its upright design, four taller adults can fit comfortably, and for those sitting in the front, there is better than average leg room for a car in this class. The side opening door and the low cargo floor is also good for loading groceries.

While there are many positives to the Nissan Cube, a few negatives exist. The small engine offers a little pep, but no chance to win any races . Even with this small engine, the Cube gets less than average gas mileage for a small car. Road noise can also be an issue when driving on the highway.

Safety should be an important consideration when purchasing a vehicle and the Cube hit’s the mark on this point. The car has standard front driver and passenger airbags, side airbags, and side head curtain airbags. It was also named a top safety pick by the insurance industry.

Is it a microvan, a mini-SUV, a tall wagon, or a UFO? The Nissan Cube almost defies categorization, but if you are seeking a sporty, funky, hip vehicle, the Cube is worth a look. It’s a great vehicle for city dwellers. For an additional review of the 2009 Nissan Cube, please go to: The Auto Channel.
