The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado hybrid comes standard with a two-mode hybrid powertrain. The V-8 engine features Active Fuel Management, which saves gas by shutting down half of the cylinders during coasting and cruising.
Features
The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado hybrid is considered to have the best mileage in its class. The hybrid engine can potentially save 140 gallons of gas a year. The standard package includes bench seating in the front, although by choosing the luxury package, one can opt for bucket seats. The truck also includes 18-inch polished wheels, a tonneau cover and 6,100 lb. towing capacity. One unique feature is the “economy gauge,” represented by a green bar that helps drivers maximize fuel economy.
Safety
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Chevrolet Silverado a five-star front-impact rating for both the driver and front passenger and a rating of four stars for rollover resistance. The truck offers standard safety equipment such as anti-lock brakes, dual front air bags, traction and electronic stability control and a tire pressure monitor. Optional features include rear obstacle detection, a rear camera and side air bags with rollover deployment.
Drawbacks
The starting price of the 2009 Chevy Silverado is several thousand dollars higher than the gas version. Some notice a high, but tolerable, amount of wind noise while driving. The trim and dashboard features of the hybrid version are considerd basic when compared to other manufacturers’ similarly-built trucks. The towing capacity is considerably less than the standard Silverado – 6,100 lbs. versus 10,500 lbs.
